Standardization was the key to low prices, economies of scale and global success. IKEA, Bosch and Apple have all perfected this strategy. But the wind is changing. More and more people want products that don’t just “somehow” fit, but are perfectly tailored to their personal needs. Welcome to the era of hyper-personalization.

Standard products: Why they are less and less sufficient for us

Standard products have many advantages: they are immediately available, well tested and often inexpensive. But at the same time, they force us into rigid shapes. The table is too big or too small, the toolbox doesn’t quite fit on the shelf, the monitor stand is too low. We live in a world full of compromises – and it is often only in everyday life that we realize how many small frustrations this results in.

At the same time, our demands are becoming more complex. Urbanization is forcing us into smaller homes, we work hybrid or remotely, we travel more, we combine hobbies with work. Our environments are becoming more flexible – but our products often aren’t.

The desire for individuality

At the same time, the trend towards self-presentation and individualization is growing. Social media reinforces this effect: everything we own becomes a stage. People want to show that they are unique. An off-the-peg product doesn’t fit the bill.

However, it is not only the desire for self-expression that is driving hyper-personalization, but also functional reasons. Many people finally want solutions that save them time, make better use of space or protect their health.

Technological door openers: prompting & kinematic systems

What used to be impossible or extremely expensive is now possible thanks to technologies such as generative design, 3D printing, modular components and prompting platforms. Instead of months of planning processes, initial solution proposals can now be generated in minutes using prompts – including kinematics, dimensions and movement logic.

An example: instead of buying a ready-made folding table that is always too big or wobbly somewhere, you can now prompt: “I need a folding table that is exactly 80 cm wide, is mounted on the wall and can be opened with just one hand.” The result: a completely new solution, exactly for your own space, your own use case, your own comfort.

The psychological effect of customized products

Individual products create a completely different feeling. They convey closeness, appreciation and pride. A product that was built just for me is more likely to be cherished, remain in use for longer and become part of my identity.

This emotional connection ensures greater sustainability. Instead of quickly bought disposable goods, a new kind of “relationship” is created between people and products. In the long term, this can also slow down the trend towards overconsumption.

The challenges of hyper-personalization

Of course, hyper-personalization also brings challenges. Logistics, production, material availability – all of these need to become more flexible. This is where platforms like Kabkin come in and automate important intermediate steps: Needs analysis, mechanical synthesis, blueprint generation. This makes even highly customized products economically feasible.

Effects on companies and markets

For companies, this trend means that mass production is no longer the sole success factor. Those who want to survive in the future must learn to produce flexibly, implement small batches economically and communicate digitally with the customer. The boundary between manufacturer and service provider is becoming blurred.

Companies that focus on hyper-personalization at an early stage can not only tap into new target groups, but also position themselves as innovation leaders. The combination of technical excellence and emotional closeness creates a completely new kind of brand loyalty.

Is the world ready?

The crucial question is: Are we as a society ready to let go of standard products? Do we really want products that suit us exactly – even if this sometimes requires a little more patience or investment? Current developments show that we do: Yes.

Hyper-personalization is more than just a trend. It is an expression of a profound change in our self-image: we don’t just want to be consumers, we want to be creators. We no longer want compromises, but solutions that really improve our lives.

Outlook

As the demand for hyper-personalized products grows, platforms like Kabkin are becoming increasingly important. They make it possible to identify, formulate and immediately implement functional needs – quickly, affordably and individually.

The future no longer belongs to the standard product. It belongs to the solution that is tailored exactly to you.

Just a few decades ago, the ideal of a product was: as cheap as possible, as suitable for mass production as possible, as universally applicable as possible.
